Radiography

Services

Overview

Radiographic Testing (RT) is a core Non-Destructive Testing service offered by ARI. Using X-rays and gamma rays, RT reveals internal flaws such as cracks, voids, and inclusions. A permanent image is produced that can be stored, reviewed, and shared with stakeholders. This makes it an ideal option for quality assurance, compliance, and long-term asset management.

How ARI Delivers Radiography

Depending on the specific project requirements, our team can operate on-site or from our workshop. For larger shutdowns or fabrication campaigns, we deploy a portable processing facility, enabling rapid development of results and immediate feedback. This flexibility ensures that inspections are completed efficiently, minimising downtime and disruptions to operations.

How Radiography Works

Radiographic testing sends high-energy radiation through the component being tested. Differences in material density and internal discontinuities absorb the radiation differently, creating an image that highlights hidden defects. Our Certified NDT technicians interpret these images, identifying cracks, laminations, or voids that could compromise the component’s integrity.

Because RT is a non-contact method, it can be performed on delicate or hard-to-reach parts without risk of damage. The results provide a clear and permanent record of internal conditions that can be shared with key stakeholders and kept for future reference.

Radiography Applications and Industries

Radiographic Testing is versatile and widely used across various sectors, including mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, and power generation.

Typical applications include:

  • Weld verification and inspection
  • Pressure vessel integrity checks
  • Pipeline and structural component assessment
  • Quality assurance for fabricated components

By tailoring our RT services to the specific requirements of each project, we provide actionable insights that help teams maintain safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.

Advantages of Radiographic Testing

  • Internal Defects Visualisation: Radiography provides a visual image of internal features, including voids, cracks, and other inhomogeneities.
  • High Sensitivity: It can detect both surface and subsurface defects, making it suitable for identifying a wide range of flaws.
  • Permanent Record: The results are a permanent record in the form of radiographic film or digital images, which can be reviewed and analysed later.
  • Applicable to a Range of Materials: RT can be used on metals, composites, plastics, and ceramics, making it versatile.
  • Deep Penetration: X-rays and gamma rays can penetrate various materials and thicknesses, allowing inspection of thick and dense components.
  • Non-Contact Method: It is a non-contact method, meaning it can be performed without directly touching the test object, which is useful for delicate or hot materials.

Considersations

  • Health and Safety Risks: The use of ionising radiation requires strict safety protocols to protect operators and the public from exposure.
  • Access to Both Sides: Radiographic testing usually requires access to both sides of the test object.
  • Time-Consuming: Setting up and taking radiographs, especially in field conditions, can be time-consuming compared to some other NDT methods.
  • Limited Sensitivity to Some Flaws: RT is less effective for detecting very small surface cracks or defects that lie parallel to the X-ray beam.
  • Operational Restrictions: Due to safety concerns, radiographic testing often requires the evacuation of nearby personnel, which can disrupt other operations.
